Growing Up in Delray |

I, too, was born in Delray hospital in 1944 and lived on Waterman until 1967, attended Cary Elementary & Southwestern High Schools. My father used to take my brother & me to the two theaters (Grande & ???) and eat at George's Coney Island near West End St. When I drove through Delray last August (2008), I noticed that the "Magyar Haz" sign was now missing from the building. How sad as that was perhaps the last artifact remaining as a tribute to Hungarian Delray. I'm not sure when my grandparents moved to Delray (before 1941 for sure) but they would be honored, as would I, if you would include their names under "Families of Delray" should you have an occasion to update your site. Their names are Louis and Margret Tury and they also lived on Waterman street. Yes you may certainly use my letters on your site. We are 100% Hungarian as both sets of grandparents were born in Hungary and immigrated to USA in the early 1900s. My father was born in New Jersey in 1917 & mother in Kentucky in 1920 so I am 2nd generation & along with my brother (1941) born in Delray. I now live part time in Thailand & part time Philippines. My parents met in West Virgina where my mother's father worked in the coal mines. He lost one of his legs when a large chunk of coal fell and crushed it. They ultimately moved to Flint, Michigan and my father's parents moved to Delray. They were married in Holy Cross church in 1940. My mother is still living at 88 yrs and still lives on Waterman St. She will never leave there she told me. Stuborn Hungarian women for sure! |
