Delray Memories

My cousin, Betty Anne Galencher, sent me your e-mail.  Both of my parents, and a couple of my Aunts and Uncles grew up/lived in Delray.

My parents moved from Delray to Wyandotte around 60 years ago (they both passed away in the 1980s).  I remember my mom telling me how nice it was growing up in Delray.  She and my dad loved living there.  I remember as a young child, my parents would grocery shop every Friday.  My dad would bring home his paycheck from Ford Motor Company, and it would be off to Delray for Hungarian meats (hurka, colbasz - I know I'm probably misspelling these words, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about).  I can't remember the name of the meat store, just that it was on Jefferson around Dearborn St.  I also remember Holy Cross Church - well, I don't really remember the church - not exactly.  I remember a church with a lot of steps going up the front - it was my cousin, Betty Anne, who said it was Holy Cross Church.

My Aunt and Uncle, Stella and Joe Varady, moved from Thaddeus St. to Lincoln Park maybe 15-20 years ago.  My Aunt Stella and Uncle Joe built their home on Thaddeus St. many, many years ago and it was very difficult for them to leave.  My Uncle put off leaving as long as he could.  However, safety became their main concern, so they finally decided to leave.

I can remember going to Delray many times to visit my Aunt Stella and Uncle Joe.  Their home was beautiful - a large bay window in their living room, overlooking the neighborhood.  (My uncle told us a Hungarian builder built their home - it was beautiful!)  And their staircase going upstairs was so nice and wide with absolutely beautiful wooden detail.  Oh, and their bathroom was large with the toilet being up one step from the floor - talk about sitting on the "throne" (ha, ha).  Did I forget to mention their kitchen with the wonderful smells of chicken paprikash or whatever Aunt Stella was cooking/baking penetrating their home.  I've often thought of going back to their neighborhood and attending mass at Holy Cross Church, but I just never did.  Aunt Stella and Uncle Joe have since passed away and are buried in Woodmere Cemetery.  Like I said, I've heard so many stories of Delray from my parents, cousins, and Aunt and Uncles, and was always intrigued by them.  So, I'd love to read all about Delray and the many stories others offer.

One of the pictures I sent you shows my Aunt Stella in her kitchen, baking a cake.  Did I mention she made the most wonderful diós torta I'd ever eaten - or shall ever eat again.  I have her recipe, but am too afraid to make it - calls for a dozen eggs, and I'm afraid I'll screw it up somehow (ha, ha).

Rest in peace, Aunt Stella and Uncle Joe - I miss you terribly.
