Joey's Stables Resturant
as remembered by Dave Onofrio
Joey Stables was a landmark restaurant on Jefferson in Delray  (just south of Dearborn Ave). Owned by Joey and Stella Nykiel and his sister, Martha Malicki, it opened in 1933.  Son, Jack Nykiel took over running the restaurant and kept it open for many years after his parents. It was a favorite Lunch and Dinner place for many dignitaries, celebrities and young high school prom couples. Everybody knew about Joey Stables for it's delicious food, music and atmosphere. The Chefs in the kitchen were top-notch, as were the waitresses and hostesses. People came from all over and ordered specialties, such as Prime rib, Pasta, Frog Legs and Fish, plus many other Italian and Hungarian dishes from the menu. (see an old menu below). The restaurant finally closed it's doors in 1989, but it will never be forgotten.

Jeff Feldmeier said: This "team photo" of Joey's Stables employees was taken in January 1937. Note: the photo is torn in the upper right corner, thus there is no issue with the wall in the background. This photo is from the archives of the River Rouge Historical Museum, members of which were kind enough to allow me to take a photo of their photo. They plan on framing their print and installing it on the wall with their Joey's exterior sign and c. 1972 menu.
