From time to time I have recevied eMail corespondence and short comments from people who have visited the Old Delray web site. The content was not long enough for a full "As remembered By" featured entry, but usually contained interesting insights as to life in Old Delray. With their full permission, I have reproduced these snippets here for you.

Robert (Bob) Takacs
Bob remembers the Hornok and Madarasz family.
I remember the Madarasz girl in the wedding dress. And the kids from Melville St. They should remember me and the Mosher brothers and Steve Szabo and Bacso and George Cselenyak. Our family lived on Medina at first as it was the original Magyar Negyed (Hungarian Quarter) My brothers and sisters were all born there so your family should know them. My Dad was George and My Mom was called Margaret instead of Erzsebet. My dads best buddy was a Mike Madarasz. My Sisters were Mariska (deceased) Irene, brothers George and Bill both deceased. I was born later on Burdeno. My cousin Andy Nagy and my Aunt and Uncle Csorgo also lived there and so did my cousin Barbara. I forgot to mention we knew the Hugleys very well. She was a lady friend of my Mom and Aunt Mary. They lived neat the Toth family (Helen, Mary, Janet and Lillian) who lived next door to the grocery on the corner of Yale and South streets directly across from the church. Their father was an usher there along with Mr. Lajtos.

Hello my friend and just wondering how you enjoyed (St.Istvan Nap) St. Stephens Day at Birmingham? We celebrate his birthday on August 15th. They used to at Holy Cross but I don't know about now. I read some of those newsletters yesterday from different people and one in particular who lived next door to my school chum John Tulak on sire. I knew his family real well as we hung out with other. His dad was a Kurator(usher) at Holy Cross. I knew his sibs like Louis who died young, also Rose who died young, and then Paul who recently passed away but his sis Mary who I danced with in 1956 and whom I wanted to Marry is still alive as far as I know. Someone else asked about Al Kazinsky who owned Als lounge on west end. It was a favorite hangout for a lot of the fellas from Holy Cross and I ate there many times. People came from all over to dine there. He'd have the gypsies there on Saturday evenings and sometime on Sunday. He closed up in the late 80s if I remember right. What a shame.

Woodmere Cemetry:
I have a few relatives buried here but can't recall the dates. My Grandmother Ambrose Szekely, My Mother Margaret Demeter 1989, My aunt and uncle Mary Csorgo and Andrew Csorgo, my cousin Mary Weaver near the pond. My Dad George Takacs is intered at Holy Cross cemetary Oct 8,1949 my Grandfather Ambrusz Szekely in 1931.
I made an error to my Grandmothers name it's proper when you refer her to being wife of but her name is actually Emerence Szekely not Ambrusz. It's a great thing that you're doing. I was looking at my book from Holy Cross' anniversary with some old photos of the church and patrons and priests etc. I also have one from the church in Allen Park showing patrons and activities etc. My cousin buried near the pond Mary Weaver was born a Nagy. Just trying to clarify things.
Sharon (Solomon) Rieden
My name is Sharon Solomon Rieden, I was born at Delray General Hospital. We lived above Lachmans Jewelry store on Jefferson between Cary and Dearborn.
My father and grandfather owned the grocery store at 8036 West Jefferson. The grocery was Solomon's Cut Rate Market. They left Delray in the mid 50's. My dad was Dave Solomon and my mother is Melvina Solomon. Our store address was 8036 Jefferson. The actual little store next door going west was 8040 Jefferson that was our tiny restaurant for a while. The other side of our store, heading east, 8032 was just a bar back then in the late 40's and 50's.
They also owned the "Delray Cafe" . My grandmother did the cooking at the restaurant before they sold it.
My grandparent, Sam and Nettie Solomon lived at the corner of Thaddeus and West End. Today it is the parking lot for the church.
Like you, all four of my Hungarian grandparents came to Delray. My one grandfather worked and retired from Ford Motor in River Rouge. He and my grandmother were Joseph and Blanka Rosenberger. They lived for many years at 725 Green, the first house behind the police station at Fort and Green.

Thank you for such a wonderful site! It's great to see all this
information about Delray. I didn't grow up in Delray, rather Lincoln
Park. My Father however did grow up there and his three sisters.
Frank, Helen, Irene and Mary Arnosky. I now live in Austin, TX and my
Father passed away in 2000, but every year I come to Detroit to visit,
I drive out to Delray and look to see what has changed...McMillian
school, the street where my Dad lived (Thadeus), Holy Cross and
Woodmere Cemetery ( I hope I spelled all those correctly?) My Aunts
Mary and Irene, now in their 90's still live in Allen park and
Melvindale. I'll be visiting them at Christmas and can't wait to show
them this site. They'll be so excited to see someone has dedicated a
site to Delray. You may know the Arnosky sisters becasue back in the
late 70's or early 80's they used to hold a big "Old Delray" party in
Allen Park. I was just a little girl at the time so I only remember a
little bit. I will try to find old photos my dad had or that my Aunts
have and I will try to post them if you are interested. Thank You
