Last post by HotrodTodd - January 18, 2012, 01:59:59 pm
Hello Everybody,
My name is Todd. I really enjoy this web site and all the stories and photos of Delray. I have a heavy interest in the prohibition era in Delray. I would really enjoy to hear stories from these times and see photos of the old bars, taverns, cafe's and resturants. In addition, I'd like to get as much history on the Carbon Athletic Club that I can find. Any stories and photos would be of great help. I've been visiting the "Carbon" for a few months now and have really been taken by the place. I've been speaking with the members of the club and I learn more with every visit. Any stories or photos would be of great help.

Thanks,
Todd

This was a beautiful post and a tribute to the memory and celebration of the life of one of Delray's residents. In the old days, whole neighborhoods would gather to mourn the passing of one of their own. So once again, old friends gathered to say goodbye to the passing of one of their own. This is also symbolic of gathering to celebrate the demise of Delray as it was, "Once Upon A Time."
"The life of the dead, is placed in the memory of the living."

Saturday morning, December 10th we held a funeral for my mother, Elizabeth (Borbas) Soter at Holy Cross Church. Many old friends and acquaintances were there.  Thank you all for your support and sympathy.  My family is grateful to you all.

Mom grew up in Delray on Keller Street and attended Southwestern High School.   She married my Dad, Joe Soter at Holy Cross on April 30, 1949.

Thanks again to everyone.

I want to acknowledge Mike Kadar and his sister Mary for hosting a GREAT reunion  party on December 10th.  Mike and Mary are closing out their mother's old house on South Street who past away earlier this year.   They decided to hold a "house closing" party for all their friends who shared many memories with them in the house.   For several hours we packed the house playing "who is this?" and "Remember when..."   It was fantastic seeing most of the old gang I ran around with.  Many I had not seen seen over 30 years.    Here's to the gang who were there:  Joe Turcsak, Steve Turcsak, Steve Vargo, Louie (Chicky) Previch, Gordon Thoms, Ron Thoms, Bobby Meyers, Richy Meyers, Donny Meyers, George Bailey, Charlie Sipos, Simon Rodriguez, Betty Soter and myself, Joe Soter.  My apologies to those I might have missed.   What a night!   We also remembered others who could not be there like Buda Cziracky, Attila Cziraky, Louie Kadar, Andy Szombati, Leonard Horvath, Denise Paruch, Claudia Witecka, Nancy nemeth, Helen Arnoscki, Sandy Wykovics, Rosy Barabas, Frank Petho, Bert Kovacs, Eddie Sandor, Johnny and Embry Breznai.  Please pardon my spelling.  For one night the old neighborhood blazed in its former glory.   Thank you Mike and Mary!

Hello all,

I went to see Alex over at the Fancy Pastry Shop in Allen Park to pick up some things for Christmas and he mentioned to us that his business has been very slow and he's worried about making it though the next year.

Will you put the word out to go visit and support this important business in the Detroit Hungarian community?

Thanks very much.

A pal of mine, whose dad's family used to live on Peterson, says his old man always talked about going down to "Boozy's" for a drink.  He doesn't know whether there was ever a place by that name, or if it may have been a nickname for the place.  If it was a nickname, it could have been used by others in the neighborhood or simply in the family.  His dad probably could not have bought a drink legally before WWII, if that is of any help.

Growing up in Old Delray / Delray Memories on Facebook
Last post by MagyarMan - October 22, 2011, 06:23:13 pm
I recently ran across this great Facebook group. It is a closed group by membership only. You need to request to added as a member. It has some great comments and photos of life in Old Delray. A great bunch of people gather there. It seems as though most of the memories are from the 50's, 60's and 70's, and there are a lot of Polish memories.
I highly recommend that you check out this Facebook group for your trip down memory lane. Here you will find a lot of Delray info that I do not have on my website. I wish to thank Katherine Maczala Czarniecki for hosting this great tribute to Old Delray.

It's a group called "Delray Memories".

Not sure if this is the same family that I remember..in the mid 1950's there was a fellow student at McMillan. His name was Donald Szuch and he had an older brother Louis, I believe.
