Hello. I grew up on West End  and Burdeno. I remember the hungarian "Gypsies". Some of the people I knew were. Im not sure if it reflects on a certain region they immigrated from or not though. I remember standing out of a bar on Jefferson ave, when the gypsy band was playing. I still have a record of gypsy music that belonged to my grandfather. The gypsy band was my first introduction to live stringed music..it was wonderful.

Funny the things you remember....
How the old people would come out very early in the mornings and sweep the sidewalks. It was so pretty and clean back then.
Climbing up onto the roofs of the buildings (from the ally) on Jefferson and going rooftop to rooftop all along the street.
Remember the old theater on Jefferson?
The dounuts in brown paper bags that were made at Holy Cross around the holidays.
Everything else that has been mentioned in other posts!

This was such a joy at Christmas time shopping in Delray with my Dad. Starting at Tony's market he loved there Meats then we walked to Zielinskis bakery to buy pastries loved how they decorated the bakery and the Streets of Delray right across the street they had the Christmas Tree next to the furniture store, then we walked to the grocery store owned by Helen Tar, that was fun to the other Bakery near Klines shoes Dad knew Kline, I think Kline moved to Livonia, but I really Loved the other Bakery then Zielinskis had  fresher Keflies, and Poppy seed and nut rolls...mmmmmm..Dad would stop in Kulchar travel agency to say Merry Christmas my Aunt(Neni) Ungvari knew Kulchar very well. Then around Lunch-time he would stop for lunch at the Bar across from Tony's with his Buther friend that worked part-time at Tony's his name was Ludwig mentioned him in another post, or my Godfather would come and have lunch his name was Franz Swarz or Frank Swartz he lived on Thaddeaus. I remember this stocking taller then ,I then this was around the early 1960's can't remember what shop that seen that stocking stuffer with all the toys and goodies, Dad said Santa bring it, laugh. And everyone was so nice walking around Delray at Christmas Time, everybody said Merry Christmas, these are some of my memories of Delray at Christmas time that I will never forgot...Merry Christmas..

Church's / Holy Cross Hungarian Church in...

I thought that it would be worthwhile to mention here that the Holy Cross Hungarian Church in Delray now has it's own website. It's a work in progress in both English and Magyar. They need and deserve your support, as they are the last ethnic link to the Old Delray community that once thrived there. When it goes, Delray will be no more. You can also visit them on Facebook.

Hi Everyone!

I worked at Tony's Market as a little boy.  The butchers I remember were Tony, Steve, Joe, and my brother who also worked the counter.  There was one more butcher, but I don't recall his name.  He was short, & thin and older than the rest.

Rose worked the cash register, and Tony's wife Mary worked the cash register too.  All very pleasant people at Tony's Market!

Tony had a farm on Pennsylvania Avenue, which I believe was Southgate, and I made many trips there with Tony and others from the market to feed the pigs and other animals.  We also went to the slaughter house to take care of the hogs.  It was interesting how they were put down/processed for selling at the market.  As a little boy, and the youngest of the group when we went to the slaughter house, I had a unique job that was part of the process.  Boy, it sure was not my favorite job!!
