Al's Bar and Kazensky's Market

I came across your web site today and just wanted to say what a nice job you did. I grew up in Southwest Detroit/Delray area. My Uncle owed Al's Bar and my Dad owned Kazensky's Market on Springwells. The web site brought back a lot of memories of how Delray / Southwest Detroit USED to be.

it was Al's Lounge that my grandfather's cousin (Al Kazcinski sp?)
owned. My grandma believes he closed it down in the late 80's or early
90s and moved to FL. Any info you would have about Al's Lounge would be
greatly appreciated."

Al's Lounge was owned by my uncle, Alexander Kazensky.  The spelling of
the last name is what the immigration officer used when my grandparents,
Alexander and Helen Kazensky, came into the US.  They lived at 9216 Lyon
St. in Delray.

My uncle Al worked the restaurant until his health deteriorated in the
late 70s, then my cousin, Alexandra, Al's oldest daughter ran the place
until conditions in Delray made it impossible to keep going - crime cut
so heavily into business, she could no longer make a go of it.  She
closed the restaurant in the 80s - early 80s, I think.  My uncle did
move to Florida where he lived with his wife, Elizabeth, for a few years
until a heart attack claimed him.  He and his wife were my Godparents.

I worked at Al's Lounge for my uncle from the time I was 11 until I
reached 16 and could get a work permit.  The food was great - genuine
Hungarian cuisine.
