Grapes on Miller road near Fort Street

I remember as child the Trains that drop box cars with Grapes, every Fall my Dad and Aunt would buy Crates of Grapes and make there own Wine ! They had the Barrels and Wine presser to see them make it and TASTE it was so fun. Would like posts if anyone remembers that. The trains dropped the Box cars on the tracks on Miller Road near Fort street..

It's funny that you mention the grapes because this past summer as I was driving down Dearborn Avenue towards Fort Street, there was a man picking the grape vines on Dearborn Street along Woodmere Cemetary's fence.
I guess some things just don't change!

Some of my fondest memories was seeing the wine barrels and wine press in my grandfather's basement. My brother and I use to sneak some wine. I still have one of my grandfather's old wine jugs. Tighly corked, but you still can smell the wine. That was 60 years ago. Some memories are too preasious to forget. The premium wine was made on the first pressing, and the table wine was made from the seccond pressing.

You have excellant site here Magyar man, those memories we will keep a lifetime.! Remember helping making Wine just tasting it when its sweet right out of the Barrels, this is when I was a child. Good Times.

Thank you Sammy, These memories are just to precious to let just fade away. Let the whole world know that their was once an active ethnic community called Delray. In this way we honor our heritage and make our grandparents smile. I am proud that I once called Delray home, as did my parents and grandparents, and someday I will return there when my days on earth are done. There is a place reserved for me in Woodmere Cemetery near all 4 of my grandparents and some of their children.
